STRANGE ACCIDENT
NAIL EXPLODES DETONATOR COURT AWARDS DAMAGES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. A curious accident was revealed in a compensation case in which Mr. Justice O'Regan gave reserved decision to-day, awarding a carpenter, Daniel Joseph Convery, £473 17/ damages, with costs. The facts were not in dispute. Convery was erecting a farmer's cottage at Levin under the Rural Housing Act and hit a projecting nail with a hammer as it appeared to be liable to catch anyone passing it. The effect of the blow was to set off a detonator which in some manner was lodged on a rafter. Convery lost an eye and suffered other injuries. The Crown, the defendant, however, denied liability on the ground that at the time of the accident Convery was doing alterations for the tenant of the house and was exceeding his authority.
