j| PATRIOTIC FUNDS __ > SCHEME MEETS OPPOSITION ■ The question whether the associaMtion was in favour of a tax for patrio--5 tic funds in place of the present ■ methods of collection was asked in a ■| letter from the Chamber of -Com_|merce received at a meeting of the r] Manufacturers' Association yesterliday afternoon. The letter suggested that the money be raised by a tax lof lid in the £ added to the social r security tax, or by some similar jway. and "that the money thus col- ',\ lected should not be expended by the t Government.
Stating that this was a very controversial subject, the president, Mr|W. J. Truscott, said the present methods were unsatisfactory in many ways. For instance, they were uneconomic in that there was a huge, ! indirect expenditure. Otner members expressed the viewthat much harm would be done to e the war effort, and that the country •-could not afford to lose the patriotic j spirit engendered by the present x efforts. il After further discussion it was r decided to state that the association 1-was opposed to the scheme of laxae tion, and a motion to that effect wa< carried.
