FINE PRICES Backers' Dreary Day At Marton SOME PROMISING HORSES (Special.) WANGANUI, thie day. There was a remarkable run of big dividends at' the Rangitikei Hunt Club's meeting at Marton on Saturday, the fields and sloppy going upsetting calculations. There were in all 11J starters in the eight races, .md the investment of XI on eac-li of these would have reeull'ed in u profit of £43 4/6 on the win machine. A similar investment on the place machine would have shown a profit of £22 odd, and £ 1 risked on every starter each way would -have returned a profit of £G5 of. Had Matalite (eeeon-d in the first division oi the Maiden) won she would have paid nearly half a cenfnry. In the Hack Hurdler* Haile Selassie, the winner, had only £2-1 invested on him on the straightout machine, and he paid more than a third of a century. The second horse, Stella Lux, rewarded her backers with close on a score. More than a quarter of a century ■was returned by Mansura on the win machine in t'he Closeburn Hack Flying. Good prices were also paid by Val Pere and Gitana Lass, second and third respectively. The winner of the Riddiford Handicap, Hasten, was at a good c'ouble-figtire win dividend, -while the rank outsider, Meamea, who was ibeaten a neek only, secured for hie place ibackere a dividend of nearly a third of a century, and would have paid more than a century had he won. The sensation of the day of surprised was provided in the Farewell Hack, wbich went to Miss Leig'hon, who returned a win dividend of over three score for the £26 10/ invested on her. The place dividend was also a double-figure one. The Phaleron Bay—Betrothed galloper Sliced, winner of the first division of the Maiden at Marton on Saturday, is a good looking youngster and one likely to win some good races for owner-trainer H. Dulieu in the new season. Matfalite, a two-year-old filly by Foxlight, ran Spliced Vo half a head. The Wangamu-owned and trained First Girl had her first run in this event and shaped very pleasingly. She was one ot the leaders "to the straight", where she ran out wide, and tfliue lost a pood chance ot being in the money. The Pombal filly is a rising four-year-old and she should make good.
Vengeance, unproved greatly by her run at ATvapimi the previous week, when rstae ran second to Lacan, beat t'he latter eaeily in the Bracelet. The Tractor mare promises to go on to better things. In the second, division of the Maiden, Darag, ridden by K. Chote, of Wanganui. scored an eaey victory- The winner i≤ a. three-year-old gelding by Bnlandshar, and is owned and trained "by Mr. J. M. Cameron at Hastings. Darag will be worth watching in the new season. Anchored By Weight Despite his big "weight, 12.4, Dauber was strongly supported for the Hunt Cup, vbut the northerner wae apparently anchored by hie load and "the eoft going, showing none of the dash he displayed at Awapuni. The Romney gelding wae very tire<l a long way from home and a faulty jump at the half-mile sent 'hie rider out of the eaddlc. Surpai was the win favourite for the Hack Hurdles, but the Takanini-trained gelding was beaten out of a place after leading at the turn for home. Summons gave a fine display of lepping in the Hunt Chip, but he had little to spare from the improving Hyderaibad. the pair fighting out a great duel over tHie last half-mile. Amigo was slow off the marik in the RiddifoTd Handicap, and five furlongs from home he was second last, with a big field in front of him. He made a fine effort over the laet Ibit to get up close to the placed horses. He wae ridden 'by young T. Waniata, who 'had the mount when t'he Beau Pere gelding won at Waverley in' May. Having his first run this season, Rehearsal went a good race in the principal flat event at Marton, and the Limond gelding should he greatly improved iby the effort. If W. Bayner can keep him going Rehearsal will -win some money early in the new season. Mies Leighon, winner of the Farewell Hack, wae formerly raced in partnership fcy Messrs. G. L. Stead and R. G. Baibingfon, of Wanganui. The latter recently disposed of hie interests to Mr. Stead, who trains the mare. Miss Leighon ihad started earlier in the day in the Hack' Hurdke, and ebe was allowed to go out in the Farewell at a great price. Expellant led into t'he Btraigjht, but faded out of it over the laet bit. He wae favourite both -ways, while Halley (second' was next fancy and looked a winner at thi distance, but Mies Leig'hon came with t great run to beat him easily.
