"RUNNING AWAY"
OPPOSITION MOVE
BUDGET SURFEIT MR. NASH ALLEGES BREACH (Bv Trlr«raph- Parlinmeiitnrs Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Events took an unexpected turn in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Government being; left carry on the financial debate when Iho Leader of the Opposition. Mr. Holland, stated in the afternoon that the Opposition would not be putting up any more speakers because the war situation had become too grave to permit of party wrangling and because the speeches the night before fell far short of what, the people had a right to expect in these critical times. The Government appeared to be taken completely by surprise. The Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Nash, charged Mr. Holland with having committed a gross breach of privileges of the House. Mr. Nash gave no indication that the Government would curtail its participation in the debate and there were sixnew speakers from the Government benches during the day. including the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclay, and the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb. All made some reference to the Opposition's move, popular expressions being that the Opposition had "thrown in the towel," that the Opposition was running away and that the Budget was so good that it made it difficult for the Opposition to sustain criticism.
In the course of his speech MiBarclay made an announcement re garding wool payments.
