BUILDING IN DOMINION The aggregate value of building permits issued in the larger centres during May was £693,868, the highest monthly total since December last. Compared with May, 1940, however, a decrease of £203,014 (22.6 per cent) was recorded. The statistics for May, 1941, include 528 permits for the erection of new buildings, an increase of 135 as compared with April, but a decrease of 169 below the number in May, 1940. Of the 528 dwelling permits in May, 1941, 305 were in respect of houses commenced by the housing construction branch of the State Advances Corporation, which also commenced operations on ten new dwellings in other districts.
