TAXATION QUESTION
AUSTRALIAN DEDUCTIONS
The belief that data from Australia dealing with the subject justified the reopening by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of the question of allowing donations to patriotic funds to be deducted from incomes for tax purposes, was expressed in a letter forwarded by the secretary of the Auckland Chamber. Dr. E. P. N'eale. to the parent body and approved at a meeting of the council of the chamber ai its meeting this morning. The information received showed that the Commonwealth permitted deductions with respect to donations to charitable and educational institutions, funds established for the comfort and welfare of members of the forces, and to the Commonwealth for the purposes of defence. In New South Wales deductions were allowed of donations to the' Lord Mayor's Fund and the Red Cross, and in Queensland it had been announced that early provision was to be made for certain deductions.
Mr. N. B. Spencer commented that the information from Australia gave the chamber a strong case to have the matter reopened. If the allowing of deductions was good enough for Australia, then surely something could be done in the Dominion.
