SUNDAY PICTURES

MT. EDEN PROTESTS DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL Protests against the screening of pictures in the borough on a recent' Sunday were made by a deputationl of ministers which waited on the! Mount Eden Borough Council meet-, ing last evening. Speaking on behalf of the nonconformist churches in the borough, the Rev. C. W. Duncumb, asked that; future applications for permission to! hold Sunday entertainments, even; for patriotic purposes, be refused. i "It was the Christian church which gave our nation the day of jrest," said the Rev. J. D. Smith! "Before that our men worked sevenj days a week. It was only the Chris-! tion church which has kept that forj you." ! t '"Do you know that the council' did not grant permission for the screening of the picture?" asked the Mayor, Mr. R. J. Mills. Before pass-l ing resolutions the churches should' have ascertained the facts. j Mr. Mills explained that an application had been received from the National Patriotic Fund Board for ; permission to screen the film, and a ( reply had been forwarded that the matter would be considered. Through a misunderstanding the borough office hcid issued verbal permission. l The film was not shown until 8.15j p.m., and none of the emplo3'ees at the theatre received payment for| their services. j On the motion of the Mayor, 1 seconded by Mr. A. T. Dow, it was; decided not to grant permission for future Sunday screenings of pie'tures without earnest consideration.
