Horses Who Impressed At Awapuni
j (U.C.) WAXCAN'I'I. Monday, j ! Alter doing tin ee-qtiarter pace work on ! Saturday I'ckoe was showing signs of lame- ] neis*, and liis? prospect* of standing up to j nitu ii, if any, more racing do not look too j blight. | A tick landers had a good day at Awapuni : on Saturday, no fewer than four hordes j from that district winning, and three of them were ridden by F. Cleaver —I he Dozer. Kxpellant and Dauber. Dauber gave a brilliant display of fencing in the Hunt Cup, skimming the obstacle* ! in great style, and gaining at every jump | in the early stages to have a lead of !•"> to •20 lengths at one stage. He was then i 1 steadied and Hyderabad got up to within 1 i two lengths of him. Dauber will have a| • stronger Held to meet at M.irton on Satur- 1 day. but even with 12.4 on his back lie is | likely to be first choice of backers in the, I Hunt Cup, and if taken south he should : win a race at Kiccarton. ! j Birkology looked sore when he went out I to contest the West Coast Steeplechase on j ; Saturday, and he was tailing the field over i | the first mile. He was then pulled up as. Ihe appeared a bit lame. However, on : ! returning to the birdcage there did not i ; seem to be much amiss with the >! Psychology gelding, and it may be he will ; be able to fulfil his National engagements,' , ! but this appears doubtful. li Chat went a good race for two miles in I j the steeplechase at Awapuni. her jumping I ] being excellent, but she is not ready yet • and the last bit found her out. It in : doubtful whether she will gi south. ! j Gayest Sou was a bit unlucky in the running in the J'e Horo Handicap at A wall puni. but he was going along nicely at the j i : finish, and his prospects in the Winter , : | Cup are stiil held in high esteem. { j A feature of the hurdle race at Awapuni ' i! was the finishing run by Tidewaiter from a 1 long way back. The Tidal gelding should j r be all the better for the race and he should ; i pay his way on the trip to f'icearton. ! j Colineamps shaped particularly well for a i : novice in the hurdles at Awapuni. and this: tj Colossus gelding can be ticked off as one, likeiy to make good at the jumping game. , I Kxpellant beat a big field of maidens on I ' Saturday in a style which suggests that j , this gelding will win some good races for i » ! Mr. C. K. Powell. ■j Belle Cane, the outstanding three-year-J [! old filly of the current season, left to-day j >! for Auckland, where she will Lie shipped to i ■ | San Fraueisco to join the stud of Mr. j \ | Louis B. Mayer, film magnate and owner ii of a large-scale thoroughbred establish- ! ! ment in California. This brilliant Beau j t ! Pere filly was purchased ;it the Trentham ; ; ' yearling sales in Ifor 27.'>gs by Mr. \V j 5 ! -f. Smith, of Australia, and she was leased ; ' i for two years by Mr. P. A. O.'NeLU. which j | lease was to expire on July 31, but Belle j ! | Cane finished lier three-year-old racing ■ career when she won the Great Northern I : ' Oaks at Ellerslie last Faster and she had ! ) l>eeii turned out for some months on Mr. j . ; O'Neill's farm. Belle Cane was a compara- ! J tive failure as a two-year-old. but this; season she had 17 starts for seven wins, i one second, a third and two fourths, her I ! total winnings amounting to £2.340 in sta kos.
1 BOLOYNA AND WINTER CUP ' At the February meeting of the I.'unedin i Jockey Club Royal Lancer beat Boloyna over seven furlouys on the second _dav. 'Koyal Lancer-was conceding Boloyna 3l\>. j and the in;iitjiii between Ui-in wa> half ja bead.. In t'lie Wintei Cup Koyal Laue.er is meeting Boloyna on 161b worse terms. The form of Koyal Lancer this season has been outstanding, but at the difference in weights Boloyna appears to have an excellent opportunity of avenging his j defeat in February in the Winter Cup. 1 Both are particularly good over a mile journey and they are two of Liie strongest ; \ southern candidates for the Kiccarton ! : event Koyal Lancer has had a particu- ! | larly strenuous season, having had races j for 11 wins and five placing*. In 16 starts ' | Boloyna has won five races and gained j j five placingß. He is a full relation to Alma, I \ a brilliant- mare who was considered i ujiluckv not fo win last year's Winter Cup. I 'as she broke down -when running in a prominent position., Boloyna won a double j I at "the last' National meeting. I
