TOLERANCE
The action of the City Council in § refusing the use of the Town Han for a political meeting and permission to the Rationalist Association to conduct its meetings makes every true lover of freedom and of tolerance rub his eyes and wonder whether he lives in 1941. Thomas Jefferson said: "To suffer the dvil magistrate to intrude his power into the field of opinion and to restrain the profession or propagation of religious principles on supposition of their ill tendency is a dangerous fallacy, which at once destroys all liberty. It is time enough for the rightful purposes of civil government for its officers to interfere when principles break out into overt acts against peace and good order. The Town Hall has been used for political meetings of all kinds, not to mention other purposes (one calls to mind the famous "Back to Chijohood" dance!), and the Rationalist meetings are. I understand, always well conducted. The decisions of the City Council are narrow, intolerant and should be reversed, and I say this as a non-interested party. C. C. CHALMERS.
