BIG HANDICAP

FIGHTING A MACHINE

INDEPENDENT'S POOR CHANCE

'•This short, sharp, hard-fought contest has served to emphasise once again the generally recognised fact that it is impossible within the space of three weeks or so to bring into being an organisation which can contend with a well-established political party," said Mr. W. B. Darlow, runner-up in the Waitemata byelection, this morning. "An Independent candidate, 110 matter how well known he may be in an electorate, is under a very grave disadvantage when fighting a candidate who has the backing of a strong political party.

"I offer Mrs. Dreaver my congratulations on her election. At the same time," added Mr. Darlow. "I would like to express my goodwill to the three gentlemen who. with me, shared defeat in the contest. The campaign was clean, and devoid throughout of those personalities which sometimes mar a political fight. There was nothing in the nature of a whispering campaign.

"The many electors who worked and voted for me on Saturday have earned my grateful thanks. The result need occasion them no grave misgivings. Like myself they will realise that it is almost impossible for an Independent to combat a party machine that has functioned successfully over the years."
