LABOUR'S WIN

WAITEMATA SEAT

MRS. DREAVER IN PARLIAMENT

With a margin of 420 votes on the provisional count, Mrs. M. M. Dreaver won the Waitemata byelection on Saturday, thus retaining the seat for the Government. The election, which was caused by the death in action in Crete of the sitting member, Captain W. J. Lyon, resolved itself into a contest between Mrs. Dreaver and Mr. W. B. Darlow. an Independent candidate, and the three; other candidates will probably forfeit their deposits of £10 each, through obtaining less than one-fourth of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate. The figures after the provisional count were:—Mrs. M. M. Dreaver (Government) 4089 W. B. Darlow 'Independent) 36G9 N. V. Dowtflas (Democratic Labour) 908 P. R. Gardner < Indenendent) 398 H. T. Head (Pan-New Zealand) 74 The comparative lack of interest taken in the campaign by electors was borne out in the polling. A total of 0300 electors exercised their franchise as against 13.000 in the 10.'3S general election. In 1938 Captain Fyon secured 7800 votes, defeating Mr. .1. E. Close (National) who polled 5515 votes. Scrutiny of Rolls The scrutiny of the rolls in connection with Saturday's poll began to-day, and it is expected that the oflicial count will be completed at the end of the week. There are 178 seamen's, absentee and postal votes to be counted, but they will not affect the result. As a result of her success, Mrs. Dreaver becomes the second woman member in the present Parliament, the other being Mrs. C. Stewart. Government member for Wellington West. Mr. Darlow gained majorities at more of the 3G polling booths than Mrs. Dreaver, but the latter polled the better in the larger centres of population such as Belmont, Birkdale. Birkenhead. Brown's Bay, Mai-, rangi Bay and Northcotc. Details of the Keturns Details of the returns as they affect the two principal candidates are as follows:—• I Mrs. Dreaver. Mr. Darlow. I
