WINDING UP
PATRIOTIC APPEAL
BIG EFFORT NEXT WEEK
With the Fighting Forces appeal now nearing an end, Auckland commercial travellers, in conjunction with all groups, have decided to make a special effort next week-end with a view to reaching the objective of £127,000.
On Friday there will be a big procession consisting of over 100 decorated floats, together with all the bands of Auckland, and all the extras ill spectacle and "stunts" that so to make a gala show. Among the floats will be one from each of the Allied Nations, decorated with the colours of the country and manned by members of the particular country's local residents in national costume. The "Queen Mothers" will all take part. During the day the commercial travellers have arranged for the sale of 60,000 mystery envelopes at 1/ each. Every envelope contains a prize, and, of course, there are many prizes many times the value of the cost. There will also be a big "Paddy's Market" and fair at the Town Hall, running from about two o'clock in the afternoon to 9.30 or 10 o'clock.
On Saturday at Alexandra Park the combined sports bodies of Auckland are putting on what should be the most outstanding gymkhana ever staged in Auckland. There will be sports of all kinds, including special trotting races, dog races and horse jumping. On the Sunday at Eden Park, at 2 p.m., the massed bands of Auckland will present a special programme. These bands attracted some 12,000 people last year, and this year the programme will be even better. It is reasonable to assume that this will be one of the outstanding events of the week-end.
