SPIRIT OF CRETE
WAR ARTIST'S WORK
VIVID PAINTINGS PRAISED
(N.Z.E.F. Official News Service). CAIRO, July IS. In the work of the only official artist to witness the battle for Crete, New Zealand possesses the most remarkable series of war paintings yet made in the Middle East. More vivid than any photographs or written descriptions, these pictures, by Captain Peter Mclntyre, official artist with the N.Z.E.F 1 ., have recaptured the spectacular features of the strangest war ever fought.
Living as a soldier in Crete, Captain Mclntyre saw the battle and the evacuation through a soldier's eyes. He sketched parachute landings as they occurred, and tramped many miles to watch other unforgettable aspects of the invasion and the magnificent resistance offered by his own comrades.
The pictures are included in his first public exhibition, which was opened in Cairo to-day by Lady Wavell. It is expected that the collection will be snipped to New Zealand as soon as possible after the show closes. Highly praising Captain Mclntyre's work, Lady Wavell said his gift as an artist, plus his experience as a soldier, eminently fitted him for his position, and added that the pictures would form an invaluable record.
