Huge Russian Tanks Thrown Into Battle In Kiev Streets

Armies totalling 9,000,000 men are facing each other along the whole of the Russian and German front in the greatest battle of history, states the German communique. The Russians the communique claims, have thrown in their last reserves in an attempt to stay the onslaught of the German Army and its Allies. It adds: Great successes are approaching."
The Ber in news agency claims that the Germans have captured Smo ensk and Polotsk and says 1000 prisoners have been captured west of Smolensk, including the Chief of the General Staff of a Soviet division. The agency a l so claims that the resistance of strong Russian rearguard units has been broken and the German panzer columns are advancing swiftly towards Moscow.
The Daily Telegraph Stockholm correspondent says battlestained and shot-pierced panzer units are fighting furiously against desperate Russian resistance to attempt to gain a foothold in the outskirts of Kiev. Russian heavy tanks, including 150-tonners have been thrown into the battle, which is raging in suburban streets. Anti-tank and machine-gun fire is meeting the Germans from every window and alley.

Preparations for the sabotage of the wheatfields east of Kiev if necessary are complete. Tallinn, the capital of Estonia has been transformed into an inferno in accordance with Stalin's orders to deprive the invaders of any assistance. Food machinerv and property are all going up in smoke. The garrison has been ordered to hold out to the death in the concrete forts encircling the city. 5
