"EXCESSIVE AMOUNT"

COMMERCE CHAMBER'S VIEW

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in a statement issued to-dav, expressed disappointment at the excessive amount allocated in the budget for civil expenditure, compared with the amount allocated for war purposes. "Reductions in civil expenditure could, for example, have been effected in the huge amounts vo'ed for expenditure on public buildings and the activities of those Government Departments which emplov large armies of staff to deal with returns which under war conditions no longer serve a really useful purpose," adds the statement. "A cutting down of public works and public services would release mammen to take the place of those who have gone overseas and thus help the war effort."
