New Phloxes Worth Proper Attention
THE new perennial phloxes are so beautiful that more should be known of their likes and dislikes. Although they demand good feeding, they respond wonderfully to the correct attention.
I In growing phloxes the first trouble, is the chief trouble, for in the preparation of the soil lies the secret of successful growth. Once the plants are put into a well-prepared bed they are little further trouble, and reward the gardener by increasing in beauty year by year. . , Perennial phloxes like a sunny position, and one where they may be left undisturbed for several: years. The soil must be deeply dug, and should have a fair quantity of wellr rotted aniSial manure worked into it. Just before putting in the plants, work a little bonedust into the soil. Established plants that lxave finished flowering should be cut back to within a few inches of the ground. A little bonedust should be carefully pricked into the soil about the plants and a mulch of well-rotted manure and decayed leaves spread over them. Plants will need only occasional attention then till the following summer, When mulching should be attended to. , Once the flower buds are forming liquid manure should be given regularly, but always after a thorough watering.
