DIPHTHERIA CASES

PREVALENT IN AUCKLAND

An increase in diphtheria cases in Auckland was stated by the Health Department to-day to be a feature of notifiable infectious diseases. The increase was first apparent last month, and had continued during the present month, the majority of the cases being among children under 10 years of age. Comparing the position with that in the winter season over the past few years, Dr. T. J. Hughes, district Medical Officer of Health, said the notifications were above the average for this time of the year, following a period in which the figures had been generally satisfactory. He remarked that periodical rises in the notifications was a feature revealed in diphtheria, past records relating to which appeared to come in waves, at intervals of several years.
