WAITEMATA SEAT

CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES

GOVERNMENT CRITICISED

Following an address at Birkenhead last night, when he continued his campaign in the Waitemata byelection, Mr. H. T. Head, candidate for the Pan-New Zealand Political Union, was accorded a vote of confidence. The candidate was supported by Mr. Charles Bailey. Mr. R. N. White presided. Mr. Head urged the reduction in the number of Parliamentary constituencies, the abolition of the Legislative Council and the institution of preferential voting. He attacked the agricultural policy of the Government, and contended that the method used in arriving at the guaranteed price was most unfair to producers. The only satisfactory method was to pay the farmer a price based on the full cost of production, to be determined by a commission at the conclusion of the farmers' year. Failing this, the .farmer should have the right of free marketing. Mr. Head further advocated the complete mechanisation of the New Zealand forces overseas. Dealing with the question of the rehabilitation of returned soldiers, as a returned soldier himself he declared that only returned men could understand the psychology of a returned soldier. Therefore, where possible, a returned soldier should be sent to Parliament to put forward their claims.
