BREAD SUPPLIES

HOSPITAL BOARD

CONTRACT DEBATED

Bread tendering was the subject of a long and at times lively discussion at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board last evening, and a decision was made to offer a contract to Peddie Brothers, Onehunga, at 4 3-16 d per 21b loaf.

The chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said that when they called for tenders, joint tenders were received from three city firms, Walter Buchanan, Ltd., Kent Bakeries, Ltd., and Stormonts, Ltd.. at 4gd. Fresh tenders were called, the three firms made a tender at the same price, and another firm a higher tender The matter was then left open Walter Buchanan, Ltd., who held the tender at 4 3-16 d last year, were asked to maintain supplies at that price. They did so until the second call for tenders, and then informed the board that as their contract had expired, the price would be at the rate of their tender. 4gd. The board had gone into the question of baking its own bread and found thev could make it for 3.867 d a loaf, but he did not recommend that action.

The chairman then moved that a contract be offered to Peddie Brothers. Firm Had Not Tendered Mr. J. Sayegh said the chairman's motion was out of order, as Peddie Brothers had not tendered. . Mr. J. H. Kinnear said that there had been misunderstanding of the position, and the chairman had got m touch with another firm without the board knowing anything about Mr. J. V. Macky said that the finance committee had written to several firms asking them to submit samples and prices. Mr. E. H. Potter said that when tenders were declined they were out of court. Mr. Macky replied that they had a duty to the tenderers to give them another chance. An amendment by Mr. W A Bishop that the matter be left with the finance committee with power to act was defeated. Mr. Macky said that they had no right to assume fresh tenders would not be received. Other members were rising to speak when the chairman declared the discussion closed. By Six Votes to Five The chairman's motion was carried by six votes to five, as follows: For: The chairman. Dr. H. Northcroft, Messrs. R. J. Coates. J. Guiniven, A. T. Parvin and E. H. Potter. Against: Messrs. W. A. Rishop J H. Kinnear. J. V. Macky, J. Sayech and V. M. Tracey. Mrs. M. M. Dreaver was not present. ! Mr. .T. Sayegh said he dissociated himself from the whole proceedings and was supported by Mr. J h' Kinnear.
