FORESTRY CORPS
AXES SENT FROM N.Z.
TO AID MEN IN CONTESTS
The National Council of the New Zealand Timber Workers' Union has forwarded six match axes to members of the New Zealand Forestry Corps in England to aid them in chopping competitions with Canadian and Australian axemen who are also serving in Britain.
In the last competition the New Zealanders were handicapped by having to use English axes which have narrower faces than those to which Dominion axemen are accustomed.
The secretary of the Timber Workers' Union, Mr. F. Craig, stated to-day that Corporal A. Devereaux, who was formerly secretary of the Owhanga Axemen's Association, wrote stating that in his opinion the defeat of the New Zealanders in recent chopping contests was attributable to the fact that they had to use axes to which they were not accustomed. The national council of the union at its last meeting took up a subscription among themselves and augmented it by a small donation from the union funds to send match axes to the Forestry Corps. These axes had now been shipped, a local firm kindly forwarding them freight free. When the New Zealanders received the axes, said Mr. Craig, members of the union were confident that they would be successful in their chopping events.
