Breaking, entering and theft, possession of firearms, credit by falsepretences and forgery were among the list of charges brought against a number of youths in the (.'hildrc-iVs Court at S'apicr. There were 27 charges altogether, mos; uf them concerned with ihoft or breaking, entering and theft. The serious nature uf the charges was stressed by Detective-Sergeant H. Xuttall. who drew particular attention to one case involving the theft of a rife and GOO rounds of ammunition. Mr. Xuttall remarked that it seemed that some of the older boys had been responsible for leading the younger ones into trouble.
Six boys wove involved in the charges. Two of them were placed under the care of the child welfareauthorities.
Speaking of the other four Mr. Miller. S.M.. remarked that they appeared to have formed a gang. "There used to be only one way of dealing with a gang and that was by whipping." said Mr. Miller. "That seemed to have a decided effect, but we are not able to order it now. You boys should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. There are lads not much older than you away lighting for their country. If ail'boys did what you did the country would not lie fit to live in." All four were placed under the control of the child welfare officer.
