"THE LONE WOLF"
FUTILE ATTACK ON SAFE
"LEAVE MONEY NEXT TIME" An amateur cracksman who styles himself "The Lone Wolf" is at it again! On Sunday night, or some during the week-end, he. and probably some of his companions in crime, broke into the office of Silknit (N.Z.), Ltd in New North Road, at the top of Symonds Street, and attacked the safe, but did not get it open. In any case, no money is ever left in the safe, or in the office, so the intruders employed much labour for nothing. By using a cold chisel or jemmy on a steel-framed window, entrance was gained. The safe was pushed over on its side and the hinges were sawn through with a hacksaw, but the tongues which fit into slots on the inside of the door could not be touched, and so the safe remained locked—and empty so far as cash was concerned. This morning when the office staff arrived and discovered the burglary they read the following typewritten note left on the safe: "Leave the money next time.—(signed) The Lone Wolf." Similar notes have been left at other premises entered recently Before departing "The Lone Wolf" took a few items of male underclothing—perhaps to keep him warm these cold days.
