OPENED TO-DAY
NEW TRADE SCHOOL
FOOTWEAR OPERATIVES
Designed to counteract the shortage of operatives in the footwear trade, the new footwear trade school at 142, New North Road, was officially opened this afternoon by the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour. Attending the ceremony were the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, Mr. A. W. Nisbet, Government organiser of emergency training, and members of the Auckland Footwear Trade Auxiliary Workers' Training Council.
Although one or two machines imported from Australia have not yet been set up, the training factory is considered to compare very favourably in layout and equipment with similar schools overseas, having been constructed on model lines. Three instructors are to teach some 40 trainees. Provision has been made for the instruction and training of eight clickers, 17 male operatives and 15 female machinists, and the course is scheduled to last 16 weeks. Actual finished articles are to be turned out and the model factory's first order has been for a supply of sandals for military forces to be used on board troopships.
