DESTROYED HIS RIFLE
TO AVOID IMPRESSMENT
(0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. A man who destroyed his .303 calibre rifle before he received an impressment notice from the Government, Keir Hardie Samms, appeared in the Christchurch Police Court before Mr. E. C. Lewey, S.M., charged with failing to give notice of the destruction of the rifle to the authorised arms officer. He pleaded guilty and was fined 20/ and costs. Sub-Inspector E. T. C. Turner, who prosecuted, said that Samms was sent an impressment notice for the rifle from the National Service Department. Samms wrote back saying that he had destroyed the rifle. "Inquiries were made and Samms made a statement to the police in which he said that, because of his holding conscientious views, he had anticipated the impressment notice and destroyed the rifle, throwing it in pieces into the Heathcote River," said Mr. Turner.
