POSTAL SERVICE

PRIVATE BAG CHARGES The view that the private bag postal service had never been a paying proposition to the Post and Telegraph Department, and the time for a revision of charges was long overdue, was expressed by the Chief Postmaster, Mr. C. Clark, in a letter received at a meeting this morning of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Clark explained that private bags were initially introduced for the convenience of country residents. For a once-daily service the annual rental was £1, and if the bag was delivered the fee was £2. For a once-daily service the charge worked out at less than Id a day. Some time ago the manpower and monetary cost in the handling of 20 private bags was investigated, said Mr. Clark, and it was found that the cost of the service to the Department was five times the revenue received. For the small charge quoted the private bag-holder received his bag securely locked, and the service was obviously most desirable, particularly for firms which catered for mail-order business and whose clients failed to register their letters.
