DAIRY INDUSTRY
LEADERS TO MEET
IN AUCKLAND THIS MONTH
Leaders of the dairy industry in New Zealand will meet in Auckland at the end of this month for the 47th National Dairy Conference, which will be held on June 25 and 26. The delegates will be welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and the conference will be officially opened by the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay. An important topic of discussion will be the change over from butter to cheese production in an endeavour to supply 160,000 tons of cheese to Britain. The industry has been in-
volved in negotiations with the Government, and the conference may be informed of definite proposals.
A remit relating to stabilisation of wages and prices declares that it should be the responsibility of the Government to buy all dairy products. Among the other remits, it is proposed that in view of the possibility of butter being stored for an indefinite period the Government should be asked to pay up to half the guaranteed price after 42 days in store and the balance after 84 days. The confei'ence will also consider a proposal that the Government be asked to announce at an early date the price to be paid for produce in the coming season, thus enabling dairy companies to fix advanced payments to suppliers. For the increased production of cheese, importance is attached to the need of maintaining an adequate supply of superphosphate, giving the dairy industry priority over other ■users.
