PROPOSED LAYOUT

AUCKLAND CONFERENCE

The proposed lay-out of the memorial at Bastion Point to the late Right Hon. M. J. Savage, was discussed at a conference held at the Town Hall yesterdav. when there were present, the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, the chairman of the parks committee. Mr. J. L. Coakley, City Council officials, the director of town planing. Mr. J. \V. Mawson, and Government officials. Competitive designs were called for the memorial, and the winning design was that of Messrs. Donner and Bartlett. of Auckland. TTie design provides for the treatment of the whole area of old Fort Bastion, eastward of the road leading up from the waterfront, and extending to the cliff-edge from the terrace in rear of the fort. It is proposed to erect a stone-faced Pylon 6 0ft high on the site of the old fire control position. In the centre of the fort there will be a symbolic statue facing inland. The mound, which stands at the rear of the fort at present, is to be removed, and the whole low, sunken, level i area converted into a sunken garden This will be sheltered by suitable planting on the east and west, it is proposed to have a sunken pool in the centre of the garden, flanked n> hedges, lawns and flower beds.
