INTRIGUED

ENGINEER'S WAGES

STORY OF £44 A WEEK

Not only did the story told to the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday of weekly wages ranging from 19 foi- aii apprentice through a swiftly rfoing scale to as much as £44 for journeymen, surprise members of the appeal board, but it has also surprised and intrigued Auckland unionists and union officials.

The figures given related to men engaged in the engineering trade, and the secretary of the Amalgamated Engineers and Allied Trades' Union, Mr. J. Neale, was asked this morning to comment on them.

"A tradesman employed continuously night and day for a whole week at the award rate would receive £45 2/, less social security charges of 10 per cent," said Mr. Neale. "and would, I consider, earn every penny of it. In the particular case under review I understand the worker was in charge of the job and received above award rates for that reason. This particularly high rate was received on one occasion only."
