YOUNG MAN GETS PROBATION

Charged with breaking two panes of glass valued at £10, thereby committing mischief, a labourer, Clyde Sydney William De Baugh, aged 21 pleaded guilty before Mr. F. K. Hunt' S.M., in the Police Court this mornn3? r i', y b £ fo r e midnight last night Constable Bailey, while in Albert ?, treet ' saw De Baugh throw stones through two windows of the Shakespeare Hotel, said Senior Sergeant Joyce- "When caught by the constable De Baugh said he broke the windows because he wanted to be locked up," added Mr. Joyce. "De ~a uf & is a sin & le man ,and works at \\ estfield, earning £3 10/ per week.. He is living "apart from his parents owing to some religious difference. He has not been in trouble before." "H'm. It's a strange case," said the magistrate. "He savs he wants to be locked up, so we'll lock him up for a week. I will remand him for one week so that Mr. Anderson, the probation officer, can make some inquiries about him." However, the hearing was reopened half an hour later, when the probation officer said he had had a talk with De Baugh. "Despite the seriousness and the stupidity of the offence, I feel inclined to recommend probation for him," said Mr. Anderson. "He is much more frightened now, and I think he will do well on probation." Mr. Hunt admitted De Baugh to probation for twelve months and ordered him to make good the damage done. "Just behave vourself in the future." the magistrate told the young man.
