AUCKLAND WINS
WOMEN'S REP. HOCKEY NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITIES LOSE BY ONE GOAL An evenly contested match resulting in a win for Auckland by two goals to one was witnessed at Melville Park today. Tired after three days of the annual tournament, New Zealand University representatives disappointed in their form against the A.H.A. eleven, but a fast aud open game was played by both teams. Xo score was made in the second spell (Auckland netting three minutes alter commencement of the match off the stick of Miss X. Hunt). Awarded a free hit from t'he 'bully, New Zealand commenced an offensive which failed to penetrate a solid defence. A counter-attack led by Miss Wain (centre-forward) saw a chance lost when a clean shot rebounded from the goalpost. The play reverted to 'Varsity's territory through the right wing, E. Farmer, and Miss K. Bilkey went in to challenge the 'keeper unsuccessfully, a nice shot 'being cleverly deflected. Auckland ipressed hard and a thrust was well saved by Miss M. liogben (in goal) on her pads. Carrying the play into the Auckland sector, 'Varsity displayed combination to roach the circle edge. Poor finish saw a possible ;»oal missed, despite a clean pass by Mrs. M. Walters (right inner). Good clearances by Mrs. L. Askew (left full-back) put Auckland on the offensive when Miss Wain collected a nice paas to net, making Auckland 2—o. Promising .movements were begun by Miss A. Morice (left wing), who took the •ball on 'her stick to the twenty-five yards line, while support was given 'by Mrs. B. Boyd at centre-half. Speculating successfully. Miss M. White (Auckland, right full-iback), broke up each attack, play ranging into midfield. Fast runs by Mrs. K. Farmer were spoilt by late centres, but backing up from the half line kept the ball in the circle. Manoeuvring the backs out of position. Varsity opened its score. Miss X. Orchard (centre-forward) netting from a melee in the goal-mouth. The half-time score was 2—l. On resuming 'Varsity set a fast pace, which was maintained throughout the same, play fluctuating from circle to circle. The passing on the whole was too flat and lack of anticipation lost many chances, although Miss Morice netted, only to be ruled off-side. From close play in the circle Auckland shot, but missed. Varsity clearing down the right wing, but not centring in time. Auckland forced two penalty corners, but the shots went wide. A snap shot by Miss X. Hunt then just missed the uprights. Varsitv next dashed down the field", but Mrs. Walters' shot was wide when three forwards were waiting to accep't a pass. Time was called immediate I *-, leaving Auckland victorious, 2—l.
