FRENCH LEADER ACTS Famous Officer And Troops Leave Syria Rec. 2.30 p.m. RUGBY, May 23. A famous French militarv leader Colonel Collet, has left Svria to join the Free French forces. * In a manifesto addressed to the officers and soldiers of the army of the Levant, he recalls the "solemn promise" of General Dentz. French High Corasioner of Syria, to defend Svria. and states that the French Ar'mv was convinced he would keep his' word. Colonel Collet states that French supplies were given to the Bagdad rebels for the war against Britain. Citing Marsha! Petain's statement of April 17. that "honour forbids us to take any action against our former Allies." he asks: "Can it be that you have forgotten so easily or attach so little importance to honour?'' Entirely rejecting Vichy excuses that German planes made a "forced landing"' in Syria. Colonel Collet says the Vichy policy is incompatible with honour, and adds that he has crossed the frontier into Palestine with his troops as he could no longer remain at his post without becoming an accomplice policy.
