RAIDING U-BOATS YOUNG CANADIAN'S LETTER
SAX FRANCISCO. May 17. A letter reporting the destruction f five and possibly six German -boats in a prowling pack has been c-ceived by Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Mac!ie. of Vernon, British Columbia. -om a Canadian youth in training ilh the Royal Navy. The letter described a U-boat ttack on a convoy which caused some losses" and then related: Our instruments located one (submarine) which we promptly sank, heard it explore. Soon after we irked up another, depth charged uriously and brought tons of oil to :ie surface—which accounted for the econeL'' A third submarine which roke the surface also was estroyed. the letter narrated, and fter further depth charges had been ropped a fourth came up 100 yards i starboard and was sunk by gunre. "While this action was going on. wo U-boais appeared directly to the ear of us and a moment later wither only :<0 feet off our port ide. At the same time one of our cstroycrs one of the rear ■oats . . . -we trained our guns on ne otii'-r rear t ib. . . . We must ave hit it as ih< y soon crashivcd.*' Then, the le'.icr went on, the submarine on ihe port side signalled hat it v, :.-r,-d to surrender.
