CIDER WITH A KICK
'SOMETHING VERY POTENT" RESTAURATEUR FINED ;P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The proportion of alcohol in New Zealand cider was commented upon in the Magistrate's Court during the prosecution of Angelo Alematoo, restaurant proprietor, who pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor without a license. The prosecution stated that the police bought cham pagne cider containing 24.5 per cent of proof spirit in the restaurant, paying 5/ for a bottle. "We do not look upon the defendant as a sly grog seller in the ordinary common sense," said Sub Inspector Capp. "The case is brought more as a warning, and the police are quite satisfied he was selling this overproof cider actually believing it ordinary cider." Counsel for the defendant said th« defendant did not know the cidei contained such alcoholic content. Ii was supplied to him as an ordinary beverage along with other drink.", "New Zealand ciders are sue! that many people can make mis takes, thinking they are drinking ar innocuous drink and finding wher they get outside that they have beer drinking something very potent,' said Mr. J. H. Luxford, S-M. The case was very different from an ordinary sly grog offence, he said in imposing a fine ol £Z and costs.
