Don't Forget Brought Change Of Fortune For Dr. M. G. Louisson
PORTUNE has not often smiled on Dr M. G. Louisson, a steward of the Canterbury Jockey Club, in his turf ventures, but he has had his moments, though until Don't Forget started off on a winning way this season his luck had been out for a long time. At the Ashburton meeting last Saturday Don't Forget won the Ashburton Handicap easily, while Benevolent. a disappointing Beau Pere gelding, started off on his winning way in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, staging an attractive run from the back of the field at the straight entrance. Among the more successful horses to carry the Louisson colours have been Gay Crest, which won the Auckland Cup of 1930, but lost it to Motere for interference, though later at the meeting he won the Auckland Racing Club Handicap; The Quorn. winner of the Auckland Railway Handicap in 1932: Hoylake, an Englishbred horse which failed in the New Zealand Cup of 192S after holding a commanding lead, but won the Metropolitan Handicap; and The Masquerader. The Start. Don't Forget was first seen in a winning light when he won the Maiden Stakes by eight lengths at the last meeting of the Christcburch Hunt Club at the beginning of the season. He was successful again in the Cashmere Plate at the Grand National meeting. His first success of importance was in the Dunedin Guineas in which he surprised by leading all the way, Doria. which had beaten him in the 6print on the first day and had a substantial pull in the weights com-
pared with their first meeting, never looking like catching him. In the New Zealand Derby Don't Forget made a great bid for an all-the-way win. Enrich just heading him after a torrid struggle. He won the seven furlongs Kinloch Handicap at Motukarara, but was not successful again until the Ashburton Handicap, though he finished third in the W. R.
C. Thompson Handicap and second to Hearth in the Doncaster Handicap at Wa6hdyke recently. In eighteen starts this season Don't Forget has a record of six wins, three seconds, and two thirds for £1625. A chestnut gelding by Myosotis from Skyrest, Don't Forget was bred by his owner, his dam tracing back to imported Mermaid. Skyrest was bred by Mr A. Adam-
son in 1930. but she was later sold to Dr Louissou. She is by Robespierre from Skyquest. by Autuninus from Telescope, by Martian from Weathereye, by Maxim from Galatea, by Apremont from Nautilus, by Traducer from Waterwich. by Camden from Mermaid (imp.) by King Tom. Nautilus was bred by Mr S. N'osworthy in 1877, being by Traducer (sensational sire of his day), from VVaterwitch, by Camden from Mermaid (imp.), by King Tom. Nautilus had fifteen foals, including Galatea, Teredo, Cynisca, Pygmalion, Lakeshell, and Bombshell. The first three foals from Nautilus were fillies by Apremont, being Galatea, leredo, and Cynisca. Galatea and Teredo founded successful branches at the Stonyhurst Stud, while ( ynisca was a good stayer, her successes including a treble 'in the Wellington Cup—lß9o9l-92. Sir George Clifford secured Galatea and Teredo from E. Cutts, his trainer for many years, and the father of H. and A. Cutts. who still train the Clifford horses at Chokebore bodge. Prolific Brood Mare. ! Weathereye was a prolific brood 'mare, her progeny including Cannie Chiel. a good horse up to a middle distance; Windwhistle. a smart mare under welter weights; Signalman, a good horse up to one mile; Sharpshooter, the Middle Park Plate winner of 1909. which later went to Australia; and Telescope. Telescope also produced several winners, the best being Long Range, a useful horse as a two-year-old and later a sire in North Canterbury. Retrospect, the dam of Recollection and Retrogression, and Seaside, the dam of Rebel Mate, were also from Telescope.
Skvquest a speedy Tiack. but the only foal credited to her in the Stud Book is Skyrest. The Best Branch. The Teredo branch of the Mermaid family was the most successful at Stonyhurst, many good winners coming from it. Teredo foaled winner-producers in Aqualate, Teredir.a. and Safeguard. Sired by Maxim, Safeguard carried on the line, her progeny including Stronghold (C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, Middle Park Plate, and the D..T C. Champagne Stakes'. Guidwife (Wellington Stakes 1 . Fleet Foot (Great Northern Foal and Royal Stakes, CJ.C. Middle Park Plate, Wellington ar.d Wcllcslev Stake?), Broadsword 'Great Northern Foal Stake? and Donca<ter Handicap), Countermine (DJ.C.
