Your Problem?
Apple Identification "APPLE" (Epsom).—The apple has all the charaOiiotlcs ol a Roma Beauty, and If it is a seedling this is the variety that it resembles most closely. White Insects "PUZZLED" (Avondale).—ln several parts of the ground, when digging, a lot ol small white insects are turned up. The ground where they are is like a thick coating of mildew or spider web. but looking closely one finds it is covered in white msEcts which disappear* in a lew moments when they are exposed to the light. Could you tell, mc what they are and If harmful to the soil or plants, also what to do to get rid of them. They arc a low insect type known as coller.lbola. and appear in damp conditions. Generally they are not harmful and can be disposed of by dressing with lime. Kumara Borer MR. S. P. CHAMBERS (Rcmuera). —Will you ploase tell me what the macci is that so damaged rny kumaras? The sample, althou:;-n It s'.iowed the result of attacks by a boring insect, did not contain one of the insects themselves, so identification is impossible. li> Is 100 late to do anything now that the kumaras have been attacked, but next year it is suggested that the ground should be well limed and the plants sprayed with a weak solution of lead arsenate. Apple Varieties "AMATEUR" (Konlmarama).—l have an apple seedling seven years old which has .borne a few apples the last few years of nice size and colour and very sweet. Although it is near a Relnette de Canada, which is badly infected with moth, the seedling is perfectly free of moth or other disease. Would you please tell me if grafting on to another stock would increase its productiveness. (2) Is it correct that fowl manure is spoiled if made into liquid? You could try grafting the seedling on to a Northern Spy. On the other hand you do not state whether the seedling blossomed freely. If this Is the case the trouble may be due to faulty pollination. Fowl manure is valuable when used m liquid form. However, it should be kept stored in a dry place until it is required to be made into liquid form. Citrus Borer "CONSTANT HSADER" (Mount Albert).—Comd you tell me how to dispose .of borer in a young poorman orange? I have pumped In turpentine, but the borer is still active. Pour in petrol and stop all holes with soap. The tree would benefit by an application of blood and bone. <g> , <g>
