A sitting of the district Manpower Committee was held at Morrinsville this week, the committee comprising Messrs. E. Edwards 'chairman). J. ,J. Poland (I'aei'oa) and E. .1. Wilton 'Thames). Only three appeals were heard in open Court, the remainder, being in respect of men who had volunteered, being heard privatelv. In appealing in respect of William George Ellis, appellant, Mr. E. J. Westlake, of Kaihere. said he had no other assistant apart from his daughter, who did not enjov the best of health. The farm carried 70 cows, 120 ewes Ejnd 70 lambs. The reservist, who had volunteered to join the air force and the navy, did not wisli to appeal. At present appellant was milking about 30 cows once a day and 2-1 twice a flay, and there was a lot of manuring still to be done. Stating that the committee was of the opinion that the best time for the reservist to do his training was from June 2. the chairman declared the appeal must be dismissed and reservist released for camp on June 2.

Robert .lames Gamble, aged 12. dental mechanic, of Morrinsville. appealed on his own behalf. Appellant stated that he was working on his own account, operated his own dental laboratory, and dealt direct with the public. He had no assistance, and if he had to go to camp he would have to close his business down. He would be unable to get anyone to carry on. In replv to a question, appellant said he was ineligible to serve in the Home Guard, as he was in the first division. He had appealed for complete exemption on the grounds of undue hardship. He was a returned soldier, having served in an Irish regiment for three and a half years. The appeal was adjourned sine die, on condition that appellant joined the Home Guard within 14 days. Norman Stanley Holmes was stated by the secretary of the Tatua Co-opera live Daily Company to hold a key position in that factory, in that he was responsible for keeping the Avhcels of the factory moving. He was employed as an engineer, with full control of the boilers. One of his duties was to overhaul the machinery and boilers in the off season. If production was to be increased next season the machinerv must be kept in good order. The reservist was serving in the Home Guard. The appeal was adjourned sine die on condition that reservist continues his present occupation and remains in the Home Guard.
