The pressure placed on the boot trade through the volume of military orders and the necessity of keeping up a reasonable supply of footwear for civilian needs was stressed by witnesses and Mr. H. S. Edwards, chairman of the Auckland Footwear Manufacturers' Association. "Our duty is to assist the country to find fighting men, but at the same time to retain essential workers and avoid embarrassing those responsible for supplies essential for the national effort," said Mr. Orr Walker, in granting adjournments.
