HOSPITAL SHIP
FIERCE NAZI ATTACK Rescuing Warship Shoots Down Raider Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, May 21. A German attack on the hospital ship Aba, formerly an Elder Dempster steamer, followed its wireless message: "Am being attacked by enemy planes." Steaming to the scene British warships met the hospital ship after three and a half hours and found she had escaped despite eight near misses. Forty minutes afterwards eight Junkers 87 returned to the attack dive-bombing both the hospital ship and one warship. Dazzling light made it hard to fix the target with anti-aircraft gunfire, but no direct hits were scored on either ship, although there were several near misses. A riddled enemy plane was later seen plunging into the sea.
