"CARRYING ON" IN BESIEGED TOBRUK

AUSTRALIAN SPIRIT News Sheet Printed, No Beer Only Complaint United rrcss Association.—Copyright. Rec. noon. LONDON, May 21. ri<J he r> wors< v enemies of Tobruk's fm£o T' Who ave been besieged for 39 days, are lack of sleep fleas boredom and dust, says the correspondent of the British United Presl who has returned to Cairo from the fortress. in^TvJh 6 l s .u^ y a sin S le building wn T l? b - Uk &? 1 haS nOt been hit > but S oi^ lU gomg on inside the town Ships in the harbour are the dive-bombers' favourite target but ships arrive and unload despite the difficulty of negotiating the harbour because of numerous wrecks. In the last few days the attacks of the dive-bombers have not been so frequent, nor have the bombers been so numerous. Pood and water are plentiful in Tobruk. but beer is unobtainable which is the only matter of complaint from the Australians. The troops receive letters regularly and bathe m the Mediterranean, despite the dive-bombing and machinegunning of German planes. The band of a Victorian regiment practises every day in the open, although the thunder of guns frequently drowns the strains of "Waltzing Matilda," and the programme is frequently interrupted by the necessity of a hasty dive into the trenches as the raiders swoop down. The Australians produce two daily news sheets. One, the "Tobruk Truth," boasts that it always appears, and it supported this claim by coming out after a 15001b bomb had landed on the building in which it is produced. The latest communique from General Headquarters in Cairo states that there is no change in the situation at Tobruk. In the Solium area our mechanised patrols have again vigorously harassed the enemy.
