EAST COAST RAILWAY

f g TIKI WHAT A TUNNEL, WORK

to c.) GISBORNE, this day. During the past fortnight tunnellors working on the last stages of the Tikiwhata tunnel encountered no special difficulties and there is fc'very reason for hoping that the "holed-through" will be completed before the end of May. Plans for celebrating the piercing of the tunnel may have to be revised if bad ground is encountered in the remaining portion of the work, but this seems unlikely as the tunnellers have a fair margin of time. At the beginning of the month the distance between the two faces was 3 21ft, and in similar ground as much as 65ft a week has been excavated in the course of tunnelling on the East Coast line.
