MT. ROSKILL'S YEAR

I RATEPAYERS' MEETING j i FINANCES REPORTED SOUND j The annual meeting of ratepayers' in the Mount Roskill Road district i was held last evening, the chairman ! of the board. Mr. C. M. McCullough ' presiding. i The annual report showed that < marked progress had been main-! tained. and altliough war conditions had affected building figures, the district continued to grow in a remarkable manner. State housing was the chief factor in this development, i and there were 420 occupied houses in this class. The value of buildings! (exclusive of State houses) erected during the past 12 months, was I £67,325. of which £47.118 represented j dwellings. The present population ' was 8750, a noteworthy increase. Although shortage of materials had curtailed public works operations, it | was the board's intention to maintain the works programme at the same figure as had ruled during the past two years. The board's plant was i • being maintained to a high standard of efficiency, and replacements at high prices need not be anticipated. The rate collection figures showed' a record collection of current rates the amount being £25.560 (93.44 per cent of the total), while the arrears are considerably reduced. All accounts were substantially in credit, and the balance-sheet demonstrated a i very sound position. A further reduc- j lion in the public debt was again shown, the amount at present being £161.736. while the rateable capital I value of the district was £2.200.000. The year's consumption of water! amounted to 108 million gallons, representing a 50 per cent increase in I six years. Steps had been taken to make extensions to the sewer-drained portions of the district. War conditions had required the teraporarv ; abandonment of the municipal build-! ings scheme so very necessary to overcome the cramped conditions under which the staff were working. The thanks of the board were tendered to the staff for very efficient service. The report was received and favourably commented upon bv several ratepayers, and a vote of thanks J accorded to the members of the board for their efficient administration. j
