TRIBUTE TO MAYOR
LOVE FOR AUCKLAND NEED FOR CIVIC PRIDE A farewell to Sir Ernest Davis on the occasion of his retirement from the mayoralty was given by the Auckland Travel Club in Milne and Choyce reception hall this morning. The president. Mrs. Victor Macky, presided. Sir Ernest said he regretted that Lady Davis could not be present. She was in Rotorua, recuperating after a breakdown, and expected to return to Auckland next week. "Whatever Lady Davis and I have done, we have done because we loved Auckland," said Sir Ernest. "It is the duty of every citizen to do his best for the city he lives in—and especially for Auckland. I have always counted it as one of the greatest blessings of my life that I have lived in this city. Sir Ernest said, however, that he thought civic pride in Auckland was not as evident to-day as it was in the past. "We. have only to look round us at the parks and other amenities to realise what civic pride accomplished in the past." Sir Ernest added that he did not intend to lay down his civic work at the conclusion of his term as Mayor • Paying a tribute to the work women were doing in this war, Sir Ernest said that we would all need 12. »e brave in the days to come, but tnat he knew women could give men a lead in courage. "The thought for the week" was by Mr. Vernon Drew, of the YjM.C.A. Mr. Earle Vaile spoke on The Levante, and a talk was also Siven by Lady Sansom, who arrived on the Monterey this morning.
