OPINIONS VARY

CATHOLICS AND WAR

FOLLOW GOVERNMENT

The attitude of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States towards the war was defined by Dr. J. McMahon. S.T.D.. who was a passenger by the Matson liner Mariposa on his way home from America after seven years' absence in Europe and the United States preparing for his Doctorate of Theology. "There are many heads of the Catholic Church who are against the United States entering the war," he said, "but the general attitude is in favour of giving all possible aicl short of war to Great Britain. There are some who advocate the entry of America into the war. However, there is no set policy on this matter, and it is generally recognised by the Church that the citizens of a country should follow the policy laid down by its Government. ' When America's decision is made Catholics will follow it. as do any other law-abiding people."
