DELIBERATE OFFENCES
SALESMAN FOR SENTENCE Five charges of false pretences by ibtaini'ng sums totalling £17 12/6 by .nrans of valueless cheques were .'dmitted by Frank Archer Hallam, salesman, aged 37, in the Police Court. Detective-Serpceant Nalder. who prosecuted, said Hallam was born in Nelson, but left for Australia when he was young. In December last he returned from Australia with a cheque book on a bank in Brisbane. He cashed nine cheques and obtained a sum of about £30. but he was charged with only five offences as the other four persons, who were either friends of accused or his people, refused to make a complaint to the police. "His method in each case was to produce his cheque book after he had got the confidence of his friends," added Mr. Nalder. "These were all deliberate offences, there being no suggestion of drink. Hallam has one previous conviction." The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, remanded Hallam for sentence on ' Thursday next, pending a report k from the probation officer.
