27 Merchantmen To Begin Taking War Materials United I'l'oss Associiiii.m. • -Cipyi-Isrln. Rec. 1 p.m. WASHINGTON. May 9. It is officially learned that 27 merchant ship?, manned by Americans, in a few weeks will begin carrying war materials into the Red Sea for British use despite Axis threats to sink such ships. Twenty-five ships, totalling 200.000 tons, belonging to the Alcoa Steamship Company, have been chartered to Canadian interests under President Roosevelt's plan for a 2.000.000ton shipping pool to assist Britain. Action by the United States in South America, it is believed in Washington, will take the form of the use of American resources to buy the control of Axis enterprises, or to finance firms to undersell them. Asked by the Cairo correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain whether he thought the United States could best aid Britain by entering the war. Captain James Roosevelt, son of the United States President, replied: "Except for .-ending troops, we are already in the war."
