It is doubtful if the going has been better at Klk'ivlic for somo time past than it was this morning an<l (several attractive sprints neve registered on the No. 2 grarss. The fastest, trials were those of Llandaff, Corot, Koyal Message, .Bronze Oia ami llappicoat. The best three furlongs was credited to Llanduff (Mcsservy), who recorded 37 2-ss. Corot (Bartels) set the main for half a mile, registering 48 3-ss. Aero King (Mosscrvy) came home from the five-fur-long post in 1.2 3-5, the last half-mile in 49 2-ss. Koyal Message (Bartels) beat Brdnzc Oia (Mosservy) at the end of six furlongs, which occupied 1.15, the last half-mile in 50s. Over the same distance llappicoat (Smith) ran 1.15 2-5, the first three furlongs in 36 2-ss. Other gallops: — Three Furlongs.—Bronzo, 3S 4-ss; All Irish and Baldric, 395. Six Furlongs.—Vaalso, 1.18 3-5; Tea Gong, 1.19 1-5; Master Warden and Maori Star, 1.19 4-5; Bon Quex and Vahnint beat Ivy Willonyx, 1.17 2-5, last half in 51s; Venture, 1.25 4-5. On the tan Koyal Appellant and Beverley ran seven furlongs in 1.37 3-5, and Miss Valerie half a mile in 55 2-ss. British Talent ran a round in 2.8 2-5. Rival (McKinnon), Kajanya (Walker), Loyal Grant (Walker) were schooled over the small hurdles. All Irish (Neil) led Baldric (Walters) over the sod wall, double, and stone wall. Makoi (McKinnon) shaped well over the same fences, and Bright Idea (Kerr) and Aprog (McKinnon) completed a similar task, troing over the fences twice. Lap Up (Dillon) and Pertinax (McKinnon) were sent over the 6ame fences. Pertinax balked at the second fence of the double, but afterwards jumped well.

DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP The race for the Duke of Gloucester Cup is to be run on May 15, the first clay of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's winter meeting. The distance is one mile and a quarter, and the minimum weight 10.7. The race is open to hacks and to horses which bavc competed three times i in a steeplechase t>r hurdle race. The event is restricted to amateur riders. The slake is £I.to, and the owner of the winner will hold the Duke of Gloucester Cup for a year and receive a miniature cup value £15. Another miniature will be presented to the rider of the winner. GOLD CUPS FOR WAR LOAN Six gold cups won bv good horses raced by the chairman of the W.A.T.C., Air. Ernest Lee Steere. were smelted at the Australian Royal Mint and gold worth about £1000 will be sold anct the ■proceeds put free of interest into the Commonwealth war loan. The cups, one of which has been in the owner's possession for move than 20 years, have, in his opinion, "been hidden away from one year to another and have neither use nor ornament.'' Mr. Lee Steere has had replicas made of the gold cups. They are Sydney and Oanlfield cups won by Eurythmic, two "Williamstown cups and a King's cup won by Second Wind, and a Caulfield cup won by Maple. DISAGREED WITH STEWARDS In Jamaica some owners have a forceful way of impressing upon stewards disagreement with their decisions. At a recent meeting at Knutsford Park a horse was disqualified for interference. "This," says a local writer, "was the cause of a inost deplorable incident. The sanctity of the steward's box was forcibly invaded by two men, who, in full view of the crowded stands, proceeded to beat up two of the stewards and the clerk of the course. Both were removed by the police, but the occurrence, which is without precedent ■ in the annals of racing m this country, cast a gloom over the rest of the day's ! proceedings." WHAREMANEA SOLD.
