CAREFREE LIFE
WIRELESS OPERATOR OX A TROPIC ISLAND Interesting observations on life on a tiny tropical island were given today by a wireless operator from the island of Butaritari, in the Gilbert group, who is passing through Auckland en route to Australia "to enjoy a respite away from the coconuts." After living for some years in New Guinea, he went to Butaritari about two and a half years ago to work for a private firm. He also undertook several duties for the Government, including that of censor. There are about a dozen Europeans on the island and about 1750 natives. "They are a happy and carefree group," he said 7 "and typically British, with a great love for liberty. It is hard to imagine them under any but British government." In what spare time they have Europeans on the islands amuse themselves with tennis, swimming and going fishing with the natives in their canoes.
