I Arrangements for the municipal ' polls to be held on Saturday, May 17, are well in hf.nd by the city ? returning officer, Mr. N. W. Kenny. ! The temporary ; staff will be paid in the aggregate approximately £1700. When the polls close at 6 p.m. 330 counters will commence the task of counting the votes. They will report for duty at 5.30 p.m. and carry on until the preliminary count is finished. Each worker will be paid 12/6. All payments to the , temporary staff are subject to the j social security and national security taxes. With the polls closing an hour earlier than on former occa-! sions it is likely that the result of! the Mayoral contest for the city will be known at about eight o'clock. The count for the return of 21 councillors will'take a much longer time. Votes have also to be counted for seats on the Hospital Board and the Harbour Board, and it is not expected that the preliminary results will be out before 11 o'clock. On the Monday morning following the poll a start will be made with the official count, a staff of 100 men being engaged for this work, which will probably take a week to comjplete% A scrutiny of the rolls is the first undertaking in order to ascertain whether there has been any dual voting.
