That the establishment of a hos-1 pital with anything from 21 to 30 j beds and capable of handling! ordinary medical and minor surgical; cases would be a definite advantage j to the North Shore was the opinion ! expressed by Mr. E. Aldridge at last night's meeting of the Devon-! port Borough Council following the ! receipt of a letter from the Auckland Hospital Board dealing with the request made by a North Shore | deputation last November. | Mr. Aldridge pointed out that the ' suggestions contained in the letter j that any hospital erected should be ' limited meanwhile to the handling ! of an estimated 360 minor cases i annually, seemed quite feasible. It' had not been contemplated that full j facilities, including X-ray and orthopaedic sections, would be pro-' vided. . I He thought the council should ' express an opinion for the guidance of the incoming council and he moved that the Auckland Hospital ! Board be asked for further details or for a workable plan for a hospital of the size suggested for such cases as had. been indicated, to be established within a reasonable distance of the main centres of population, j The Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, I said the only objection he had had ; to the project was that a second-rate | hospital might be erected but, in j cases of emergency, the proposition advanced had definite advantages. He would therefore support it. The resolution was carried unanimously.
