SERVICE TERM.

STATE EMPLOYEES.

APPEAL BOARD REQUEST.

The need for State Departments to give some indication as to how long reservists had been in their

employ at the time appeals were entered was stressed at to-day's sitting of the Xo. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board by the chairman, Mr. C. 11. Orr Walker, S.M., when sine die exemption was sought by the Director of National Service on behalf of officers of the Police Department in Auckland. The ground of appeal was that of public interest by reason of the occupation of the reservists. The chairman said there was no reason to doubt the- bona fides of tho.se police officers outlined in the list submitted to the board, but it was only right that, as a judicial body, th<> board should have corroborative evidence in the matter. It was simply a question of the principle involved and this should be borne in mind by all Departments of State.

The police officers for whom exemption was sought were:—Verdun Charles Benbow, Frederick James Bowley, Raymond Atkinson McKay Brien, Clifford Brown, John Johnston Couper, James Campbell Dallas. William Steele Edwards. Kenneth Walter Fletcher, Allan Anzac Fraser, William Friend. Robert Joseph Kerr. Donald McLaren Piercy Martin, William Thomas McMatli. Clarence Thomas Price. John Russell, Edward Francis Clement Searancke, John Edward Hamley Sloggett, John Roland Butler, Winston Alfred Bird, Lloyd Gray Cameron.

It was decided to adjourn the appeals sine die on the certificate of the Director of National Service, subject to proof being submitted that the reservists had been in the employ of the Police Department for an appreciable time.
